The Presidential Student Leadership Academy (PSLA) program at Delaware Tech is designed to develop students' leadership skills, foster self-awareness, and deepen appreciation for the nation’s history and diverse cultures. I was selected to participate in this transformative experience with 24 other hard-working students, combining academic exploration, hands-on activities, and personal development.
Throughout the program, I engaged in a series of enriching activities, including readings, discussion groups, and reflective writing exercises. These experiences explored key leadership themes such as self-awareness, empathy, servant leadership, and critical thinking, while also emphasizing the importance of history in shaping modern-day leadership decisions.
Under the guidance of President Mark T. Brainard and senior administrators from Delaware Technical Community College, I learned about the values that drive effective leadership, such as compassion, ethical decision-making, and the importance of serving others. Through group discussions and facilitated workshops, I collaborated with fellow participants to explore how we can apply these principles in both our academic and professional lives.
A highlight of the program was a trip to Washington, D.C., where we had the opportunity to connect with national leaders, visit historical landmarks, and gain firsthand insight into the political and cultural forces that influence our nation’s direction. This trip deepened my understanding of leadership in the context of national governance and public service.
